OTHER BATTLE FRONTS
Roberto Garza has been somewhat injury prone in his first three seasons, but after avoiding those troubles so far this summer, he has put himself in position to at least be considered a competitor at LG, where journeyman Michael Moore is the starter for now, and even behind C Todd McClure. ... RBs James Fenderson and Quincy Wilson, who're likely competing for the final RB spot on the Falcons' roster, aren't making much progress. Each player got knocked in the head Aug. 20 against Minnesota. Wilson's concussion was worse, but Fenderson may miss a couple days with a sprained ankle.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
QB Matt Schaub. This one's a no-brainer. Schaub was so good in the win over Minnesota (16 of 19 for 205 yards and three touchdowns, passer rating of 151.2) that some members of the Atlanta media jokingly suggested that the team may have a quarterback controversy. "This is a guy who's not forcing anything," said eight-year veteran RB Warrick Dunn. "He's taking what the defense gives him. He's making plays with his feet, evading defensive linemen, and hitting short passes. To have so much poise is surprising. You really can't teach that, but he has it."
ROOKIE REPORT
CB DeAngelo Hall - the team's first pick, No. 8 overall, got beat by Randy Moss for a 67-yard touchdown pass, but coaches liked the way he bounced back. ... WR Michael Jenkins - the team's second first-round pick, caught a 47-yard touchdown pass and a 16-yard reception. He picked up his pace dramatically after a slack 10 days prior to the game against Minnesota. ... QB Matt Schaub, a third-rounder, is likely to win the No. 2 job over Ty Detmer. ... OLB Demorrio Williams, a fourth-rounder, is having a very fine summer. He had four tackles and back-to-back sacks when the Vikings reached Atlanta's 25-yard line on their final drive, when they were angling for a game-tying field goal. ... DT Chad Lavalais played a lot against Minnesota, and coaches have started looking at him at DT in addition to the NT spot where he's been working. He'll get far more work at NT. ... S Etric Pruitt, a sixth-rounder, was better against the Vikings than he'd been eight days earlier against the Ravens. He's been steady on special teams, too. ... RB Quincy Wilson, a seventh-rounder, suffered a concussion early in his stint against the Vikings Aug. 20.
